Headed back up the East Coast to Savannah

Updated: May 3, 2023

April 1 through April 16 (Click on the images to see and scroll them in full size)

Saturday, April 1 we visited the McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach and over the next few days we ate at amazing restaurants, did some needed boat maintenance and celebrated Glenn's birthday. Finally, on April 4, we left Tarpon Springs Marina on Patriot and with Encore for the last time heading toward Vero Beach.

On Wednesday, we anchored at Dragon Point and had dinner with Glenn and Carol's family. To get there we took a LONG dinghy ride across the Intracoastal waterway and got kind of lost in some canals before we found the restaurant. The next day we walked around Titusville and saw 2 museums, the Titusville Museum and the amazing American Space Museum and Walk of Fame where they have the most incredible collection of space program memorabilia that we have ever seen!

On Friday, April 7 we got up EARLY: and saw the 12:30 am Space X lift off at the Kennedy Space Center from bridge near our marina in Titusville.

We also visited Cape Kennedy Space Center, which for a space geek like me was an amazing day, we saw models and actual spacecraft from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. We even actually saw the Atlantis shuttle which were all on display.

Sunday, April 9 was Chris's birthday and Easter. To celebrate we ate at Red Koi Hibachi, had birthday cupcakes and played cards with Glenn and Carole aboard Encore. The next day we stopped to St Augustine and met Glenn and Carole's daughter, rented a car and traveled to Buc-ee's to give Carole her first taste of their amazing barbecue and the experience that is Buc-ee's!

April 11 we took the Old Town Trolley tour around St Augustine, visited a great wax museum, did some shopping and ate at Hurricane Patty's restaurant at our marina.

April 12 we stayed at a free dock at Jim King Park. There was a very strong current. We tied up to a floating dock and had a close call due to the strong current when leaving the dock the next mooring. The next day, we got hit by squall near Amelia Island and got the kayak torn off of the roof of Patriot, fortunately Glenn recovered it. That afternoon, we tied up at Jekyll Harbor Marina and we took a courtesy golf cart around the Island, a very resort like feel to it. Nice marina, very helpful staff. The next day we left early to beat low tide, and had a very glubby (IE. noisy) anchorage that night.

When we got to to the Isle of Hope marina near Savannah we took the marina's free courtesy car, into Savannah and Christine had her first time trying deep fried okra. We also walked an old Savannah cemetery that had graves as far back as the revolutionary war. Sunday we took that courtesy car again, and toured the Savannah History Museum where we saw an amazing collection including the actual bench that Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump sat on and told his story. We also visited Walmart and Ace Hardware on our way back to the marina.

In our next installment, we continue up to Norfolk leaving our boats to return home for a month. It is amazing to realize that so far we have traveled over 4,180 miles over 7 months on this amazing adventure called The Great Loop since leaving Port Washington, WI!
